Electronic Voting Machine

Introduction
EVM is an Electronic Voting Machine Which is used to conduct electronic voting in elections times. EVM manufactured by two company Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore and Electronics Corporation of India Limited, Hyderabad. Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) was first used in 1982 in Assembly Constituency of Kerala for 50 polling stations. Then it used as a part in 1999 of election and finally 2004 it used fully.
As traditional elections system a voter casted your vote to your favorite candidate by putting the stamp against his/her name and then folding the ballot paper as  Ballot box. This is time-consuming process and very much error occurred.

Features of EVM:-

  • It reduce the time in casting votes.
  • It also reduce the time taken to count votes and declare results.
  • It without network connectivity, and nobody can interfere with its programming and the result.
  • It save lots of paper work.
  • Votes can be stored in machine up to many years.
  • EVM reduce chances of vote rigging
  • vote cast in EVM faster.
  • A maximum of 3840 votes can be recorded in one EVM

Design of EVM :-
EVM consists of two units. These units are joined together by a cable.
1. Ballot unit (used by voter uses to exercise his / her vote)
2. Control unit (used by the polling officials).
The Ballot Unit is the simple voting device. It displays the list of candidates. A facility to provide party names and symbols is inbuilt. All the voter has to do is press the desired switch located next to the name of each candidate.  A single ballot unit takes in the names of 16 candidates. And thus, by connecting four ballot units the EVM can accommodate a total of 64 candidates in a single election.

The control unit is the main unit which stores all data and controls the functioning of EVM.
The display system of the control unit shows the total number of votes polled in a polling station and the candidate-wise votes polled in the machine

How record vote on EVM :-
Ballot unit presented with a set of buttons on the Balloting Unit. Each button will have a corresponding sticker of the political party to that button. Once making your selection, simply press the blue button and wait for the signal from the election official confirming that your vote has been registered.

Capicty:-
Normally less than 1400 votes are assigned to a polling station. An EVM can record a maximum of 3840 votes which exceeds this number.

Limitation:-
Elections can be conducted through EVMs when the maximum number of candidates does not exceed 64. If the number of candidates exceeds 64, then there is no option than to use the conventional method of ballot papers.
